FUNDAMENTALS OF WOOD CARVING A four-night class to help one learn and understand the basics of wood carving and wood sculpture. This is a foundational class for obtaining proper wood carving knowledge and skills in traditional woodcarving. Traditional woodcarving is using specialized tools to affect maximum efficiency. Our goal is to assist you in beginning to learn how to carve quickly and to have more time to do what pleases you.

Lesson 1 Lesson 2
What is a good tool? Which are the most used and best to begin with. Other useful tools for carving wood are explained. Power sharpening explained. Demonstration: sharpening chisels with time to practice. Sharpening gouges demonstration and time to practice. Sharpening V-tools and specialty tools demonstration with practice time.
Lesson 3 Lesson 4
Carving techniques demonstration explaining layout and basic cuts. You carve a rosette with your interpretation of the design. Use your tools to learn the basic cuts and properties of wood, thereby determining further interest and investment.

What are the nine styles of woodcarving. How to select and season your wood is explained. How to continue developing your woodcarving skills is explained.

He has studied under Chris Effrem at the Wood Carving School. A wood sculptor and turner, George enjoys sharing his knowledge about carving and woodworking. He is the main instructor at the Wood Carving School and founded Wood Carvers Store & School in 1988.

WOOD CARVING PROJECT CLASS 6 night series once a week

Project classes help you to learn how to develop and carry out a project. Project classes are general interest, so you can pick what you want to work on. The instructors help you to develop the skills you need to work efficiently on benches. This class is repeatable so you can learn different aspects and solutions in wood- carving. NEW options: Take the series or lessons 3 to 6 or just one night.

Our sources of designs. What are some elements of good design? Explaining methods of enlarging and reducing patterns. Showing how to use clay in design and pattern development. Preparing your design in clay and on paper. A woodcarving visual overview (slides). Learning how to begin carving your project.
Lesson 3 Lesson 4
Defining the large shapes in your project. Refining the large shapes in your carving.
Lesson 5 Lesson 6
Refining large and small shapes in your carving. Detailing and finishing your carving.

Kevin Showell is a professional woodcarver. He trained under Chris Effrem. He has carved a variety of subjects and styles from large and in the round to architectural, and classic ornamental. Carving professionally since 1994.
